Review ASTATIC Microphone

The Astatic DN-50 is a high-quality, professional-grade dynamic microphone that is designed for a wide range of applications. This microphone features a unidirectional (cardioid) pickup pattern, which means it is highly effective at rejecting background noise and focusing on the sound source directly in front of it.

The DN-50 is constructed with a durable, all-metal body that is both rugged and lightweight, making it ideal for use in live performance, broadcasting, and recording studio environments. The microphone's diaphragm is made of Mylar, which provides excellent frequency response and ensures accurate sound reproduction.

The Astatic DN-50 has a frequency response of 50 Hz to 15 kHz, which makes it well-suited for vocals, instruments, and other sound sources. It has a sensitivity of -53 dBV/Pa and an impedance of 300 ohms, which allows it to work with a wide range of preamps and mixers.

One of the standout features of the Astatic DN-50 is its robust build quality. It is designed to withstand the rigors of constant use and can withstand drops and other physical abuse without suffering damage. The microphone also features a swivel mount, which allows for easy positioning and adjustment.

Overall, the Astatic DN-50 is a versatile and reliable microphone that is well-suited for a wide range of applications. Its unidirectional pickup pattern, durable construction, and excellent sound quality make it a popular choice among professionals in the fields of music, broadcasting, and audio recording.

The Astatic DN-50 is a dynamic microphone known for its durability and clear sound quality. Here are some pros and cons to consider before making a purchase:

Pros:

1. Durable Construction: The Astatic DN-50 is built to last, with a heavy-duty steel body and a reinforced grille. Its robust construction makes it an excellent choice for live performances, broadcasting, and other high-stress environments.

2. Clear Sound Quality: The microphone provides a clear, natural sound with minimal distortion, making it ideal for speech and vocal applications.

3. Versatile: The DN-50 can be used in various settings, including live performances, broadcasting, podcasting, and voiceovers.

4. Affordable: Compared to some high-end microphones, the Astatic DN-50 is relatively affordable, offering good value for its price.

Cons:

1. Limited Frequency Response: While the DN-50 delivers clear sound quality, its frequency response is not as wide as some other microphones. This may limit its ability to capture certain sounds or instruments.

2. Requires External Power: Unlike some microphones, the Astatic DN-50 requires an external power source, which can be an inconvenience in some settings.

3. Not Ideal for Vocals with High-Frequency Content: If you're looking for a microphone to capture high-frequency sounds, such as bright vocals or instruments, you may want to consider a different model.

In conclusion, the Astatic DN-50 is a durable and affordable microphone with excellent sound quality for speech and vocal applications. Its robust construction makes it an excellent choice for live performances and broadcasting. However, its limited frequency response and requirement for an external power source may be cons for some users. If you're looking for a versatile microphone for speech and vocal applications and don't mind the external power source, the Astatic DN-50 could be a great option for you. If you need a wider frequency response or a microphone that does not require an external power source, you may want to consider other models.

Details:

When received the connector insert in microphone base that mates with stand was completely destroyed, cord not good, and unit needed cleaning. This should serve well for a long time. The two mike element leads are brought out on the yellow and orange un grounded with a shield over them, push-to-talk blue white floating. You are buying on an Astatic DN-50.

I obtained a 3-pin male connector insert and drilled / tapped new hole at Pin 1 on the so that when installed in mike would line up correctly with base with push-to-talk lever left as seen from front. I installed a new cord on the microphone. Because the mounting screw for connector insert is a standard thread 4-40 but with smaller-than-normal head I obtained 4-40 Flathead and ground down to be flush mike base when it was installed. I removed the black cover inside grille and cleaned grill, mike case, base with Dawn dish soap.

The element inside works correctly, as can be seen from the waveform photo. There are some scratches on the base and mike case. I soldered a wire in Pin 1 that the mounting screw would press against so mike case the upper part be correctly bonded to base via when head was screwed on stand.
